Introduction to Film Photography, The Camera, the Negative, and the Print Workshop, February

Welcome to the opportunity to learn film photography, to become a “New Magician,” because that is what film photography and printing is… Magic! The Kentucky Darkroom Workshops have a 3 attendee to 1 facilitator ratio… and no workshop over 6 attendees. You will have all your questions answered and have the attention you need to really understand the magic. This workshop takes you back to the days of film, yes, to the roots of Photography which has evolved into the digital now mirrorless photography world as we know it now.  But more, it lets you create really unique and magical images that are only really available to those who understand film, the “analog” way of capturing our wonderful world.

First, in the morning of the workshop, we will learn generally about those vintage film cameras, how they differ from our digital cameras of today and how they are similar. We will go over how the magic of film works, what grain is, and the process of capturing light… which is what photography is really about fundamentally. Each attendee will then be loaned a vintage, manual film camera if they did not bring one and a light meter if needed. Then, each will load the supplied 12-frame black and white film canister into it after demonstrations of proper technique. We will then shoot the roll for fun at a close-by park. Break for lunch, then back to the darkroom, pull the negatives out, spool them, put them in the developing tank, and invoke the magic of photochemistry!

After the workshop it’s time for the Film Fotography Fan meetup while that film, those magic negatives, are left to dry. Photo stories will abound.  It’s like fishing… we can all rave on about the “one that got away!”  Yep.

Then, take home the negatives you created and save them for the next workshop… the Printing!

We know you will enjoy this class in the magic of film photography! The imagery, learning, experience, and fun will stay with you for years to come!

Introduction to Film Photography, The Print, March

The Introduction to Film Photography, The Print covers the papers, the chemistries and the techniques needed to make a fantastic Black and White Print. Bring one or more processed rolls of negatives and make a contact print, select your favorite frame, and then print an 8X10 of that image. We will also supply a black mat so you can frame your 8×10 and hang it proudly in your home.

We will cover the various types of paper, the variety of developers and several types of specialty printing. We will show you tools you can use to get the developing right, apps you can get on your smartphone and online resources.

Come join in the fun and magic of the Darkroom!

Introduction to Film Photography, The Negative, February

This Introduction to Film Photography – The Negative is all about the film negative. We cover the history of film, the different sizes and types of film, how film is made, how film “works,” and more. You will process one or two rolls of film you’ve previously shot. If you bring two, please have them be both of the same type and be either Ilford HP5, Kodak T-Max, or Kodak Tri-X. After processing you will learn how to use a negative cutter and you will receive a negative protector sheet that you can keep your negative in. The protector can fit into a three ring binder.

Come join in the fun and magic that is Film Photography.

Introduction to Film Photography, The Camera, January

This workshop covers the manual film camera such as a Minolta STR, a Canon AE-1, or a Pentax K-1000. We will cover the basics of camera operation, settings that contribute to a great exposure, metering, loading and unloading the film, and the proper handling of film.

We will also be showing a variety of other cameras to show the evolution of the film camera from the Camera Obscura and other early cameras to modern day digital, with the emphasis on the film cameras that made photography great.
